More precise. More trustworthy?

An invented historical map gives exact coordinates. A modern map admits uncertainty about the same boundary. Is greater precision a sufficient reason to trust a knowledge claim?

Precision concerns how exact a representation appears; accuracy concerns its agreement with what it represents. Trust also depends on method, evidence and purpose. An exact line can be precisely wrong.

  1. Distinguish the concepts.

Precision concerns how exact a representation appears; accuracy concerns its agreement with what it represents. Trust also depends on method, evidence and purpose. An exact line can be precisely wrong.

  2. Examine justification.

The modern map’s uncertainty may make the limits of its evidence more transparent. The historical map’s exactness could reflect a political or administrative purpose rather than a better survey. Investigate before concluding.

  3. Test the counter-perspective.

A bounded estimate is not automatically more reliable than an exact one. A precise result supported by robust methods may deserve greater confidence. The comparison must concern justification, not visual style alone.

  4. Develop the implication.

Trust should be calibrated to the evidence and the purpose for which knowledge is used. A boundary adequate for navigation may be inadequate for a legal decision. This practice question is not an official prescribed TOK title or exhibition prompt.

A successful discussion does more than give two opposing opinions. Work on the connection between example, justification and implication, then consider when your judgement might change across contexts or areas of knowledge.

Bring a question, a recent piece of feedback or a task you find difficult. We’ll help you identify what needs attention and choose a useful next step.

EXCEPTIONAL TUTORS. RIGOROUS STANDARDS.What it takes to teach at AcadyDiscover how we select, screen and support our IB teachers and graduate tutors.

Outstanding qualifications are only the starting point. We select exceptional IB teachers and IB graduate tutors through a rigorous screening process, looking for the expertise, teaching ability and dedication that make a lasting difference to students.

Four qualities. Every Acady tutor.

Deep subject mastery

A thorough understanding of the subject, with the ability to explain both the fundamentals and the most demanding concepts clearly.

IB mastery

Detailed knowledge of the IB curriculum, assessment criteria and exam expectations, so every lesson supports what the student needs to achieve.

Teaching that connects

The ability to turn knowledge into understanding and build rapport with different students, adapting to their learning preferences, obstacles and challenges.

Commitment & consistency

Effective tutoring grows through a structured, consistent relationship. We work with tutors who prioritise their students and commit to supporting them for the long term.

There are many tutors online. Only a small selection meet all four standards. Our selection process brings these qualities together to give you or your child the strongest possible foundation for academic progress.

How we safeguard teaching quality

  1. Recruit against strict requirements

We select IB teachers and graduate tutors whose academic background, IB expertise and commitment meet our demanding entry requirements.

  2. Get to know the person

Through multiple interviews, we explore their motivation, communication style and approach to supporting students over time.

  3. Put teaching skills into practice

Subject-specific case studies test how they explain ideas, respond to difficulties and guide a student towards understanding.

  4. Verify their background

We rigorously check qualifications and relevant experience, making sure the credentials behind an impressive profile stand up to scrutiny.

  5. Monitor quality and consistency

We follow our tutors’ performance, reliability and teaching quality, with the impact on students’ progress as our central measure.

  6. Stay involved with families

We stay in close contact with IB families and their tutors, helping align expectations, address concerns and keep the right support in place for each student to do their best.

EXPERTISE. CARE. REAL PROGRESS.

Why choose Acady
for IB TOK?

At Acady, your tutor match and lesson priorities start with your needs. Work with an IB TOK tutor on developing knowledge arguments that stand up to questioning, with focused feedback and opportunities to put the learning into practice.

02

Support shaped around your TOK task

Share your chosen official exhibition prompt or prescribed essay title, exam session and school guidance. Your tutor helps you clarify the task and identify the reasoning that needs work.

03

Turn an example into an argument

Discuss what an example reveals about knowledge and why it matters to the question. Your tutor challenges unsupported claims and helps you explore a relevant alternative perspective.

04

Evaluate rather than list viewpoints

Practise explaining the strengths, limitations and implications of a position. Use feedback to make your judgement more precise while keeping the exhibition commentary and essay writing your own.

05

Test your thinking in conversation

Use an online lesson to explain an object’s context or defend a line of argument. Your tutor’s questions help reveal assumptions and prepare you to make more independent decisions.

06

Experience the match in a trial lesson

Start with a free consultation, then a 60-minute trial lesson to experience the support. If the match feels right, continue straight away. If a different approach would suit you better, our team helps you find another tutor.

YOUR COURSE. YOUR NEXT STEP.

TOK support

Develop the skills behind your own work. Tutoring complements the guidance and requirements provided by your school.

01

EXHIBITION

Connect an object to a knowledge question.

Practise identifying the specific context of an object and explaining its connection to the chosen official prompt. Develop your own justification rather than relying on a generic claim.

02

ESSAY

Develop and test an argument.

Work on interpreting an official prescribed title, selecting relevant examples and evaluating perspectives. Discuss the reasoning while keeping the essay itself your own.

What we can work through together

Knowledge questions & concepts

Narrow the focus and clarify the terms before building a response. Check that the question fits the task and the evidence available.

Examples, perspectives & justification

Examine the basis of a claim, the strengths of a source and the limits of a method. Distinguish a possible explanation from a justified conclusion.

Exhibition reasoning

Organise a line of reasoning that stays focused on the task. Discuss how an example supports the claim and what a counter-perspective changes.

Essay argument & evaluation

Plan manageable next steps and reflect on decisions. Work within your school’s guidance while keeping the thinking, research and writing your own.

TOK is a DP core component, not an SL or HL subject. Use the official prescribed essay titles and exhibition prompts for your task; the classroom example here is practice material. Official IB course information ↗

What can an IB TOK tutor help with?

IB TOK tutoring helps you turn an interesting example into an argument about knowledge. Explore what a claim depends on, compare perspectives and develop a judgement that stays focused on the knowledge question. Tell us which part of the course or task is currently most difficult so we can discuss suitable support.

Can you write or rewrite my TOK essay?

No. We can discuss concepts, test the logic of an argument and help you practise evaluation. The examples you select, the reasoning you develop and the text you submit must remain your own, within your school’s rules.

How do you support independent work?

We can discuss methods, practise relevant skills and help you understand expectations. The work you submit must remain your own. Your school’s rules determine which forms of outside support and feedback are appropriate.

Does this follow my school’s requirements?

Share the task instructions and examination session. We use them to discuss appropriate support and respect the role of your teacher or supervisor.

How does online tutoring work?

Meet your tutor online and work through the material together using discussion, shared examples and a whiteboard where useful. Sessions can combine explanation, practice and feedback around your questions.

How does the trial lesson work?

Start with a free consultation to discuss your needs. A 60-minute trial lets you experience the support before continuing. We explain the trial options and costs before you book; if the match needs adjusting, we help you find a more suitable tutor.
