APPLY. INTERPRET. EVALUATE.

Which quantity belongs in ΔH?

Mix 25.0 cm³ of 1.00 mol dm⁻³ acid with 40.0 cm³ of 0.500 mol dm⁻³ alkali. For a 1:1 neutralisation, estimate ΔH from a 4.0 °C rise.

AssumptionValue
Solution density1.00 g cm⁻³
Specific heat capacity4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹
Heat absorbed by cupNeglected
Step 1 of 4Identify the limiting amount.

Acid: 0.0250 × 1.00 = 0.0250 mol. Alkali: 0.0400 × 0.500 = 0.0200 mol. The alkali is limiting, so 0.0200 mol reacts in the stated 1:1 reaction.

Read the complete walkthrough
  1. Identify the limiting amount.

    Acid: 0.0250 × 1.00 = 0.0250 mol. Alkali: 0.0400 × 0.500 = 0.0200 mol. The alkali is limiting, so 0.0200 mol reacts in the stated 1:1 reaction.

  2. Calculate the heat transferred.

    The combined solution mass is 65.0 g under the density assumption. q = mcΔT = 65.0 × 4.18 × 4.0 = 1086.8 J. This is heat gained by the solution.

  3. Use the correct sign and denominator.

The reaction releases heat: ΔH = −1.0868 / 0.0200 = −54.34 kJ mol⁻¹, or approximately −54 kJ mol⁻¹ at the precision of the temperature data. Dividing by all the acid would be incorrect.

  4. Evaluate the estimate.

Heat lost to the surroundings or absorbed by the cup reduces the observed temperature rise, making the calculated enthalpy less negative. The estimate also assumes constant density and heat capacity. Explain the direction of error, not just its existence.

REACH YOUR FULL POTENTIAL

The Benefits of
IB Chemistry Tutoring

Chemistry questions often demand more than a correct calculation. A tutor helps you connect the equation to the particles and processes involved, choose the right quantities and explain the assumptions behind your method.

Work through linked questions, discuss where your reasoning becomes uncertain and practise explaining each step. Targeted feedback helps you strengthen weak areas before applying your understanding to more demanding tasks.

EXCEPTIONAL TUTORS. RIGOROUS STANDARDS.What it takes to teach at AcadyDiscover how we select, screen and support our IB teachers and graduate tutors.

Outstanding qualifications are only the starting point. We select exceptional IB teachers and IB graduate tutors through a rigorous screening process, looking for the expertise, teaching ability and dedication that make a lasting difference to students.

Four qualities. Every Acady tutor.

Deep subject mastery

A thorough understanding of the subject, with the ability to explain both the fundamentals and the most demanding concepts clearly.

IB mastery

Detailed knowledge of the IB curriculum, assessment criteria and exam expectations, so every lesson supports what the student needs to achieve.

Teaching that connects

The ability to turn knowledge into understanding and build rapport with different students, adapting to their learning preferences, obstacles and challenges.

Commitment & consistency

Effective tutoring grows through a structured, consistent relationship. We work with tutors who prioritise their students and commit to supporting them for the long term.

There are many tutors online. Only a small selection meet all four standards. Our selection process brings these qualities together to give you or your child the strongest possible foundation for academic progress.

How we safeguard teaching quality

  1. Recruit against strict requirements

We select IB teachers and graduate tutors whose academic background, IB expertise and commitment meet our demanding entry requirements.

  2. Get to know the person

Through multiple interviews, we explore their motivation, communication style and approach to supporting students over time.

  3. Put teaching skills into practice

Subject-specific case studies test how they explain ideas, respond to difficulties and guide a student towards understanding.

  4. Verify their background

We rigorously check qualifications and relevant experience, making sure the credentials behind an impressive profile stand up to scrutiny.

  5. Monitor quality and consistency

We follow our tutors’ performance, reliability and teaching quality, with the impact on students’ progress as our central measure.

  6. Stay involved with families

We stay in close contact with IB families and their tutors, helping align expectations, address concerns and keep the right support in place for each student to do their best.

EXPERTISE. CARE. REAL PROGRESS.

Why choose Acady
for IB Chemistry?

At Acady, your tutor match and lesson priorities start with your needs. Work with an IB Chemistry tutor on understanding chemical ideas and choosing the right method, with focused feedback and opportunities to put the learning into practice.

02

Lessons begin with your Chemistry work

Bring a calculation, an explanation or recent teacher feedback. Your tutor identifies the missing step and builds practice around it, whether that means revisiting mole ratios or connecting structure to properties.

03

Understand why the method works

Use particle models, equations and energy changes to connect the calculation to the chemistry. Work through a limiting-reagent or enthalpy problem together, then explain why each step is needed.

04

Turn feedback into a stronger next answer

Review command terms, units, significant figures and the precision of your chemical explanations. Your tutor helps you use that feedback on a related question, with less prompting as your understanding develops.

05

An online whiteboard for chemical reasoning

Draw structures, balance equations and compare calculations with your tutor in real time. Discuss experimental data and uncertainty while keeping your assessed investigation and submitted writing your own.

06

Experience the match in a trial lesson

Start with a free consultation, then a 60-minute trial lesson to experience the support. If the match feels right, continue straight away. If a different approach would suit you better, our team helps you find another tutor.

YOUR COURSE. YOUR NEXT STEP.

Chemistry SL or HL?

Choose support that matches your actual level, material and examination session. The depth of a lesson should reflect what you are studying and where you want to improve.

SL

STANDARD LEVEL

What we can work through together

Atomic structure & bonding

Connect the underlying concepts to a diagram, model or unfamiliar scenario. Practise explaining why a process occurs, not only recalling its name.

Amounts, energetics & reactions

Work through linked questions and identify which quantities or observations matter. Make assumptions explicit and keep your explanation consistent with the evidence.

Rates & equilibrium

Explore connections between topics and apply them to the situations in your course. Identify where an explanation needs qualification or additional evidence.

Organic chemistry & investigation skills

Interpret graphs, compare methods and explain limitations. Plan practice around the reasoning your teacher’s feedback identifies as needing attention.

Tell us your level, examination session and the topics or options selected by your school. Lessons follow your actual course and its assessment requirements. Official IB course information ↗
