APPLY. INTERPRET. EVALUATE.

The highest score is not enough.

Choose a handle design for users with limited grip strength. A mandatory operating-force limit is 15 N. Should a weighted score override that requirement?

A weighted matrix combines preferences such as appearance, cost and ease of repair. A mandatory accessibility requirement is a constraint. Prototype A cannot be accepted simply because its overall score is higher.

  1. Distinguish constraints from preferences.

A weighted matrix combines preferences such as appearance, cost and ease of repair. A mandatory accessibility requirement is a constraint. Prototype A cannot be accepted simply because its overall score is higher.

  2. Question the evidence.

Ask how force was measured and whether representative users tested the handle in realistic conditions. One measurement may conceal differences in hand size, fatigue or technique. Scores are only as credible as their evidence.

  3. Develop an evidence-led iteration.

Use B as the viable starting point and identify which features account for its lower score. Change one feature deliberately, then check that improvements in cost or appearance do not compromise operating force.

  4. Make a conditional recommendation.

Recommend B provisionally, with repeated user trials and durability testing against the specification. Explain the trade-off and the evidence still needed. A justified decision includes limits, not just a winning score.

The Benefits of
IB Design Technology Tutoring

A successful design needs more than an appealing idea. Design Technology tutoring helps you turn a brief into clear requirements, compare possible solutions and use testing to justify your decisions.

Work through linked questions, discuss where your reasoning becomes uncertain and practise explaining each step. Targeted feedback helps you strengthen weak areas before applying your understanding to more demanding tasks.

EXCEPTIONAL TUTORS. RIGOROUS STANDARDS.What it takes to teach at AcadyDiscover how we select, screen and support our IB teachers and graduate tutors.

Outstanding qualifications are only the starting point. We select exceptional IB teachers and IB graduate tutors through a rigorous screening process, looking for the expertise, teaching ability and dedication that make a lasting difference to students.

Four qualities. Every Acady tutor.

Deep subject mastery

A thorough understanding of the subject, with the ability to explain both the fundamentals and the most demanding concepts clearly.

IB mastery

Detailed knowledge of the IB curriculum, assessment criteria and exam expectations, so every lesson supports what the student needs to achieve.

Teaching that connects

The ability to turn knowledge into understanding and build rapport with different students, adapting to their learning preferences, obstacles and challenges.

Commitment & consistency

Effective tutoring grows through a structured, consistent relationship. We work with tutors who prioritise their students and commit to supporting them for the long term.

There are many tutors online. Only a small selection meet all four standards. Our selection process brings these qualities together to give you or your child the strongest possible foundation for academic progress.

How we safeguard teaching quality

  1. Recruit against strict requirements

We select IB teachers and graduate tutors whose academic background, IB expertise and commitment meet our demanding entry requirements.

  2. Get to know the person

Through multiple interviews, we explore their motivation, communication style and approach to supporting students over time.

  3. Put teaching skills into practice

Subject-specific case studies test how they explain ideas, respond to difficulties and guide a student towards understanding.

  4. Verify their background

We rigorously check qualifications and relevant experience, making sure the credentials behind an impressive profile stand up to scrutiny.

  5. Monitor quality and consistency

We follow our tutors’ performance, reliability and teaching quality, with the impact on students’ progress as our central measure.

  6. Stay involved with families

We stay in close contact with IB families and their tutors, helping align expectations, address concerns and keep the right support in place for each student to do their best.

EXPERTISE. CARE. REAL PROGRESS.

Why choose Acady
for IB Design Technology?

At Acady, your tutor match and lesson priorities start with your needs. Work with an IB Design Technology tutor on making and justifying better design decisions, with focused feedback and opportunities to put the learning into practice.

02

Support shaped around your design problem

Bring your brief, specification or testing feedback. Your tutor helps you identify whether the next priority is understanding a user need, comparing materials or making the evaluation more precise.

03

Compare solutions against real requirements

Discuss materials, manufacturing choices and sustainability in relation to a design specification. Test the reasoning behind a decision instead of choosing an option only because it looks appealing.

04

Use evidence to improve the next iteration

Review what a prototype test establishes and what it leaves uncertain. Practise explaining how the findings inform a change, while keeping the design development and assessed work your own.

05

Discuss sketches and prototypes online

Share annotated drawings, models and test results with your tutor. Work through alternative approaches and practise communicating the connection between a requirement, a design choice and its evaluation.

06

Experience the match in a trial lesson

Start with a free consultation, then a 60-minute trial lesson to experience the support. If the match feels right, continue straight away. If a different approach would suit you better, our team helps you find another tutor.

YOUR COURSE. YOUR NEXT STEP.

Design Technology SL or HL?

Choose support that matches your actual level, material and examination session. The depth of a lesson should reflect what you are studying and where you want to improve.

SL

STANDARD LEVEL

Apply your understanding clearly.

Build confidence with Design Technology tasks at the level you are studying. Work on selecting relevant knowledge, communicating a method and using evidence to support your answer.

HL

HIGHER LEVEL

Develop depth and independence.

Work through the additional demands of your HL course and make more precise connections. Your tutor adapts the depth of practice to your syllabus, selected material and teacher feedback.

What we can work through together

Users, needs & specifications

Connect the underlying concepts to a diagram, model or unfamiliar scenario. Practise explaining why a process occurs, not only recalling its name.

Materials, manufacture & sustainability

Work through linked questions and identify which quantities or observations matter. Make assumptions explicit and keep your explanation consistent with the evidence.

Modelling & iterative development

Explore connections between topics and apply them to the situations in your course. Identify where an explanation needs qualification or additional evidence.

Testing, evaluation & design communication

Interpret graphs, compare methods and explain limitations. Plan practice around the reasoning your teacher’s feedback identifies as needing attention.

What can an IB Design Technology tutor help with?

A polished prototype needs a convincing design argument. IB Design Technology tutoring helps you connect user research, specifications, material choices and testing, so each iteration has a clear purpose. Tell us which part of the course or task is currently most difficult so we can discuss suitable support.

What should I bring to a Design Technology lesson?

Bring your task instructions, relevant class materials and any teacher feedback. A recent attempt is useful even when it is unfinished: it gives the tutor a clearer view of your reasoning.

Can you help with assessed coursework?

We can discuss methods, practise relevant skills and help you understand expectations. The work you submit must remain your own. Your school’s rules determine which forms of outside support and feedback are appropriate.

Can you support both SL and HL?

Tell us your level, examination session and course materials so we can discuss an appropriate tutor match and the depth of support you need.

How does online tutoring work?

Meet your tutor online and work through the material together using discussion, shared examples and a whiteboard where useful. Sessions can combine explanation, practice and feedback around your questions.

How does the trial lesson work?

Start with a free consultation to discuss your needs. A 60-minute trial lets you experience the support before continuing. We explain the trial options and costs before you book; if the match needs adjusting, we help you find a more suitable tutor.
