A battery is not an ideal source.

Terminal voltage falls as current rises. Infer the emf and internal resistance, then find the efficiency with a 4.0 Ω external resistor.

For V = ε − Ir, the gradient is −r. From the two points, ΔV/ΔI = (9.60 − 10.8)/(2.40 − 1.20) = −1.0 V A⁻¹. The internal resistance is therefore 1.0 Ω.

Read the complete walkthrough
  1. Read the gradient physically.

    For V = ε − Ir, the gradient is −r. From the two points, ΔV/ΔI = (9.60 − 10.8)/(2.40 − 1.20) = −1.0 V A⁻¹. The internal resistance is therefore 1.0 Ω.

  2. Find the intercept.

    Using either measurement, ε = V + Ir = 10.8 + 1.20 × 1.0 = 12.0 V. The emf is the zero-current intercept, not the terminal voltage under load.

  3. Connect current and power.

    With R = 4.0 Ω, I = ε/(R + r) = 2.4 A. Power in the external resistor is I²R ≈ 23 W; power dissipated internally is I²r ≈ 5.8 W.

  4. Evaluate efficiency and the model.

The useful fraction is R/(R + r) = 4.0/5.0 = 80%. This assumes steady emf and internal resistance. Two points alone cannot establish linearity over a wide current range or rule out heating effects.

Start with the physical model, then translate it into mathematics. Use dimensions, limiting cases and the shape of a graph to check your work, and explain where an idealised model may stop being reliable.

Bring a question, a recent piece of feedback or a task you find difficult. We’ll help you identify what needs attention and choose a useful next step.

REACH YOUR FULL POTENTIAL

The Benefits of
IB Physics Tutoring

Knowing a formula is only the beginning. Physics tutoring helps you recognise which model fits the problem, connect diagrams to equations and check whether your result makes physical sense.

Work through linked questions, discuss where your reasoning becomes uncertain and practise explaining each step. Targeted feedback helps you strengthen weak areas before applying your understanding to more demanding tasks.

EXCEPTIONAL TUTORS. RIGOROUS STANDARDS.What it takes to teach at AcadyDiscover how we select, screen and support our IB teachers and graduate tutors.

Outstanding qualifications are only the starting point. We select exceptional IB teachers and IB graduate tutors through a rigorous screening process, looking for the expertise, teaching ability and dedication that make a lasting difference to students.

Four qualities. Every Acady tutor.

Deep subject mastery

A thorough understanding of the subject, with the ability to explain both the fundamentals and the most demanding concepts clearly.

IB mastery

Detailed knowledge of the IB curriculum, assessment criteria and exam expectations, so every lesson supports what the student needs to achieve.

Teaching that connects

The ability to turn knowledge into understanding and build rapport with different students, adapting to their learning preferences, obstacles and challenges.

Commitment & consistency

Effective tutoring grows through a structured, consistent relationship. We work with tutors who prioritise their students and commit to supporting them for the long term.

There are many tutors online. Only a small selection meet all four standards. Our selection process brings these qualities together to give you or your child the strongest possible foundation for academic progress.

How we safeguard teaching quality

  1. Recruit against strict requirements

We select IB teachers and graduate tutors whose academic background, IB expertise and commitment meet our demanding entry requirements.

  2. Get to know the person

Through multiple interviews, we explore their motivation, communication style and approach to supporting students over time.

  3. Put teaching skills into practice

Subject-specific case studies test how they explain ideas, respond to difficulties and guide a student towards understanding.

  4. Verify their background

We rigorously check qualifications and relevant experience, making sure the credentials behind an impressive profile stand up to scrutiny.

  5. Monitor quality and consistency

We follow our tutors’ performance, reliability and teaching quality, with the impact on students’ progress as our central measure.

  6. Stay involved with families

We stay in close contact with IB families and their tutors, helping align expectations, address concerns and keep the right support in place for each student to do their best.

EXPERTISE. CARE. REAL PROGRESS.

Why choose Acady
for IB Physics?

At Acady, your tutor match and lesson priorities start with your needs. Work with an IB Physics tutor on turning physical models into clear solutions, with focused feedback and opportunities to put the learning into practice.

02

Find where the reasoning breaks down

Start with your own attempt at a mechanics, circuit or wave question. Your tutor checks whether the difficulty is the physical model, a diagram, the algebra or interpreting what the result means.

03

Connect the diagram to the equation

Build force diagrams, trace energy transfers and identify which quantities matter. Discuss the assumptions behind a model before choosing an equation, so that unfamiliar questions feel more approachable.

04

Practise explaining and checking your result

Receive feedback on your method, units, uncertainty and physical interpretation. Then try a related problem independently and explain how you know whether the answer is reasonable.

05

Make invisible relationships visible

Use a shared whiteboard to sketch fields, compare graphs or analyse a circuit. Your tutor can follow your working as it develops and address the step that needs attention.

06

Experience the match in a trial lesson

Start with a free consultation, then a 60-minute trial lesson to experience the support. If the match feels right, continue straight away. If a different approach would suit you better, our team helps you find another tutor.

YOUR COURSE. YOUR NEXT STEP.

Physics SL or HL?

Choose support that matches your actual level, material and examination session. The depth of a lesson should reflect what you are studying and where you want to improve.

SL

STANDARD LEVEL

Apply your understanding clearly.

Build confidence with Physics tasks at the level you are studying. Work on selecting relevant knowledge, communicating a method and using evidence to support your answer.

HL

HIGHER LEVEL

Develop depth and independence.

Work through the additional demands of your HL course and make more precise connections. Your tutor adapts the depth of practice to your syllabus, selected material and teacher feedback.

What we can work through together

Mechanics & energy

Connect the underlying concepts to a diagram, model or unfamiliar scenario. Practise explaining why a process occurs, not only recalling its name.

Thermal physics, waves & circuits

Work through linked questions and identify which quantities or observations matter. Make assumptions explicit and keep your explanation consistent with the evidence.

Fields & nuclear physics

Explore connections between topics and apply them to the situations in your course. Identify where an explanation needs qualification or additional evidence.

Modelling, uncertainty & experimental analysis

Interpret graphs, compare methods and explain limitations. Plan practice around the reasoning your teacher’s feedback identifies as needing attention.

Tell us your level, examination session and the topics or options selected by your school. Lessons follow your actual course and its assessment requirements. Official IB course information ↗

What can an IB Physics tutor help with?

Knowing a formula and recognising when to use it are different skills. An IB Physics tutor helps you turn unfamiliar situations into diagrams, assumptions and connected calculations you can defend. Tell us which part of the course or task is currently most difficult so we can discuss suitable support.

What should I bring to a Physics lesson?

Bring your task instructions, relevant class materials and any teacher feedback. A recent attempt is useful even when it is unfinished: it gives the tutor a clearer view of your reasoning.

Can you help with assessed coursework?

We can discuss methods, practise relevant skills and help you understand expectations. The work you submit must remain your own. Your school’s rules determine which forms of outside support and feedback are appropriate.

Can you support both SL and HL?

Tell us your level, examination session and course materials so we can discuss an appropriate tutor match and the depth of support you need.

How does online tutoring work?

Meet your tutor online and work through the material together using discussion, shared examples and a whiteboard where useful. Sessions can combine explanation, practice and feedback around your questions.

How does the trial lesson work?

Start with a free consultation to discuss your needs. A 60-minute trial lets you experience the support before continuing. We explain the trial options and costs before you book; if the match needs adjusting, we help you find a more suitable tutor.
